2005: Käsmu Merekool
[Käsmu Marine School]
4th Year Project, Diploma Unit 22, The Bartlett, UCL
Käsmu Merekool takes it’s name and brief from a maritime school that was closed when invading Soviet forces fortified the North Estonian coast in 1940. The aim of the new Merekool is to assist the regeneration of rural Estonia by teaching traditional maritime skills to both locals and visiting foreigners. The building itself is partially buried within a length of shoreline opposite Käsmu. Those areas that emerge from the ground have a semi-monocoque engineered timber roof that allows the man-made roofscape to blend into the hillside. The design emphasizes the annual cycles inherent within the brief: boatbuilding workshops are primarily used in winter months while the sailing school is busier in the summer tourist seasons. This allows both institutions to make use of the central multi-functional spaces.
